For the longest time I had a basic key ring, a car key, a couple house keys, a shed key, about 5 in total with a clip for my belt. Well I finally got with the times and now I have a new car key that is huge and a seperate fob for the power locks and whatnot. While the fact that it's a new Mustang GT makes me feel better about it, I don't really like the cumbersome keys. Has anyone done anything trick?

Here I what I did:
I bought a used Ford Ranger that had only one key. A new spare key was about $100 -- clearly ridiculous. The truck just senses that the key is near the key slot. Get a couple normal keys made from the existing key. Take the shroud off of the steering column find a place in there that will let the new regular key start the engine. Glue the original key in place. The "key reader" gets the proper signal from the glued in key and lets the new key with out the radio response chip start the engine. Replace the shroud. I've been running my truck this way for years. Your key chain will only have a regular brass key. I don't know what to do about your door lock fob -- I just threw mind in the console and use the key. |
