Let's get this out of the way first. Fifty-bones is too damned expensive for a key chain bottle popper. Even so, I love the design aesthetic and the work behind the limited ... To read the rest of this blog entry from The Gear Journal, click here.

so, let me get this straight. it's a 2½ x ⅜ x ½ piece of cold rolled steel that has a hole drilled in it, a square cut out of the opposing end, has been waxed, and comes with a short piece of paracord. and people are expected to pay $50 for this?! any real man could make one of this in about 5 minutes. i'm in the wrong damn business...

i love the pure simplicity of it though!

It is slick but even if I had one for free it would probably sit like my other cool openers.. Seems with marriage all the good bottle beer went the way of the Dodo... Don't need a fancy opener for Coors Light....

Looks like you guys got under his skin. Go read the blog, chap is kinda defensive but I wish him luck. His products look to me like the stuff Brad Pitt would buy. I collect bottle openers and the old, worn classics just have a soul that this piece does not. Don't get me wrong, it is cool but I like the zipper pulls better.

Peter Atwoods stuff is a lot cooler and more functional... but sometimes more expensive. I guess you get what you pay for.

I like the concept and the design is pretty cool, but I agree that the price is a bit steep. It's unfortunate to see the guy become so defensive on his own blog though, really not projecting a good image to potential customers. Would he react defensively in the same way to a customer that had a problem with a product they purchased? Not something you want to have your customers thinking about when they do business with you.

Again, great idea, but a bit (ok, a lot) over priced in my opinion. If people buy it, more power to them, but if it were me I'd take the high road instead of letting potential customers see that I was flustered by a website that reviewed my product. My $.02 anyway.

i'm glad i remembered to check this thread again, as i wouldn't have known about the response from my initial post if i hadn't! i won't write out a full rebuttal, but i'll hit a few points i noticed...

"Who is anyone to judge what something is worth?"
well this is the very basis of the free market economy! a product isn't worth what the producer says it is , but rather the value placed on it by the consumer.

"I could care less if someone writes a random post with something negative to say about my prices because it doesn’t effect me in the least, but it will effect them in the long run so probably rethink before you post."
as a potential customer, you should care what this someone writes. instead of viewing my post as an 'attack' of sorts, view it instead as constructive criticism. brash, i will admit, but the intent wasn't to offend. IMHO, pricing these around $35 as is would be (somewhat) reasonable, or producing them out of an exotic metal such as titanium at the current price would be more appropriate and net you greater sales.
i gotta say, i'm very curious as to how my constructive criticism will affect me - presumably negatively - in the long run though.

i'm certainly not trying to sound like someone with an inflated self importance with these comments - i'm just one of many potential customers after all. and, as you can see, i'm not the only potential customer here that believes your pricing is off. myself and the other posters here are potential customers for your products too, not just some 'keyboard warriors'. it's the shared interest in these sorts of products that brings us to this site after all.

"And to the latest guy that wrote about me…you suggest that any man can cut a piece of steel into a bottle opener and that you’re in the wrong business. Have at it and good luck to you, I’m pretty sure that nobody’s stopping you."
being a craftsman at heart and possessing a weakness for small knick knacks(namely, one's made of metal or exotic composites), i do dream of producing small run specialty products such as these. but, as is often the case, it's not a person stopping me at the moment but rather the current priorities of my life and finances. maybe i'll start something up once i knock a few goals out and progress further in my career.

BTW, this definitely ended up being more long winded than intended
