Not really security as much as peace of mind...
My shop is detached from the house and up a hill. It also sits slightly forward of the house and runs long ways to the house. Shop is rectangle, runs East/West, house is rectangle and runs North/South. What I'm getting at, I can't see the 16 x 7 door on the front of the shop without putting some pants on and wandering halfway out the front yard or up the hill to see it. There are three windows on the house side of the shop, two windows on the shop side of the house. I'm thinking I can place a laser in the far side of the shop in such a way that the door will block it when it is open and not when it is closed. The laser would shoot out the window and hit the window to my bedroom. Then, at night, I could just take a look for the dot on the bedroom blinds and know the door is still closed. So, I'd need a fairly decent laser and I'd want it to run ac/dc, not batteries. Silly idea? Probably. Guarantee you I've had sillier. Probably a couple hundred more between the time I posted this and you read it. :-) |

Not at all. everynight when i wake up to take a piss, i peer out my bathroom window at my shop and garage. Looking for movement and flashlights. If you were a thief going into your shop, would you leave the door open when you snooped around? What if they didnt open the door all the way?
Now if opening the door at all trigered a flood light to the face of the intruder and laserbeam to your room, theyd be long gone by the time you got there. Security is about detering not confonting. Confrontation equals problems for you. The laser beam will help you sleep better though. |

Good points.
My main thinking on the laser was so I could tell if I left the door open or not. I got all the stuff to put a couple LED's in the window closest to my bedroom window. That will take care of that. I'm looking into a couple security systems, wireless, that will cover the shop as well. And I also found a 500 watt halogen motion detector light I forgot I bought. The light in the face comment gives me some ideas for it. |

ADT Security or something similiar. They have sensors for doors, windows and motion that set off an very loud alarm plus it alerts the company who then calls you to find out if things are ok. If not or you fail to answer or if someone answers who doesn't know the code word they call the cops.
